NEW YORK (CBS) As the sun sets on what turned out to be a blockbuster summer at the box office, studios are gearing up to roll out movies that get Oscar buzz.
Gigantic summer hits such as "Shrek Forever After" and "Iron Man 2" - recording the fourth and fifth biggest openings ever - and "Toy Story 3" which ended the summer as the top grosser, pulling in over $400 million, have set the bar high. But with the following releases in hand, the best of 2010 may be yet to come.
September gets off to an action-packed start with films like "Machete" starring Robert De Niro, Danny Trejo and Steven Seagal from 20th Century Fox and "Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps". Michael Douglas reprises his role as fallen financier Gordon Gekko in the Oliver Stone sequel to "Wall Street". This time round ,Gekko teams up with a young Wall Street trader (Shia LaBeouf), who happens to be his daughter's (Carey Mulligan) fiance, to track down a killer and forewarn others about a massive about-to-explode financial meltdown . Despite Douglas' recent diagnosis of throat cancer, the film is set to release on schedule and reps for the studio say he will be on hand to promote it. The movie prominently debuted at the star-studded Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
In October, look out for "The Social Network" an au courant Columbia Pictures release directed by David Fincher, taking an in depth look at how Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) created Facebook, the ubiquitous social site that just surpassed 500 million users.
Also in October comes Walt Disney Pictures' "Secretariat". A feel- good movie based on a true story, the film chronicles the remarkable journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Diane Lane plays Penny Chenery, a housewife and mother who agrees to take over her ailing father's Virginia-based horse stables. Together with trainer Lucien Loren (John Malkovich) they manage the impossible, fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what many consider the greatest racehorse of all time.
Another Fox release to look for is Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell starring in "Conviction". After a lukewarm reception to her last project, "Amelia", Swank looks to redeem herself, playing a single mother who spends nearly two decades trying to earn a law degree to overturn her brother's (Rockwell) unjust murder conviction.
Out in November in limited release comes "Fair Game" a compelling film inspired by the real-life outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame. Naomi Watts plays Plame, who while investigating the existence of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, learns her covert identity has been compromised. Sean Penn plays her husband, who penned an op-ed article criticizing the Bush administration that started the ball unraveling.
For kids, both young and old, DreamWorks offers "Megamind". An all-star cast that includes Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt give voice to this animated feature about Megamind - the most brilliant super-villain the world has ever known..but also the least successful, thanks to a caped do-gooder named "Metro Man", who continually thwarts his best efforts.
Roger Michell ("Notting Hill") and J J Abrams ("Alias", "Lost", "Fringe") bring together a cast of characters in the Paramount Pictures release, "Morning Glory". Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton play a couple of morning television news anchors at each other's throats. Jeff Goldblum is their boss and Rachel McAdams is the unfortunate producer charged with reining them in, in this hilarious romantic comedy that highlights the dysfunctional world of morning television
Also in November, the wait is finally over for Harry Potter fans. The penultimate installment of J K Rowling's mega franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Part I" is set to hit theaters Nov. 19. There's an added bonus for fans who just can't get enough - the Warner Bros. film will release in 3-D. Director David Yates returns to send Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) further in their quest to end once and for all Voldemort's reign of darkness by seeking out the Horcruxes.
And look for Jeff Bridges to close out 2010 the way he rang it in - making a huge impression with not one, but two movies set to release.
"Tron : Legacy", releasing in 3-D is one of the most anticipated movies this year. The 3-D high-tech adventure is set in a digital world that is unlike anything before captured on the big screen. Like it's predecessor, "Tron", expect this follow-up to be a groundbreaker in its' own right. In it, Bridges reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, father of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year old, haunted by the disappearance of his father. Flynn senior is a man once regarded as the world's leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal, he finds himself pulled into a digital vortex and comes face-to-face with his father who helped create it.
Together the two learn that the cyber universe they are in is more advanced than either could have imagined, and trying to escape turns into the challenge of their lives. This sequel is sure to delight fans of the 1982 Disney original, as well as draw in a whole new generation, gripped by the virtual world of video games.
And the Hollywood legend follows up on his best actor Oscar win for portraying a down- and- out country crooner in "Crazy Heart", with the Paramount release "True Grit".
Directed by the Coen brothers, the movie teams him with Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. Bridges plays a trigger-happy, 안동출장샵 drunken U.S. marshal who helps a teenager track down the coward (Brolin) who shot her father.
The film is set to release Christmas Day.
